Master of Me by KeKe Palmer
Writing Style: Conversational. Passionate.
Pacing: Fast.
Personal Highlights: Well, all-righty! Akeelah the bee is all grown up and kicking back practical advice for those seeking to know how she did it…or how to do it. I really liked the bee movie… seemed like yesterday though; naturally why this memoir ended up on my reading list. Man! How time flies!
The writing is cool, chic, conversational... and passionately feely. Instantly I was fan of Sharon… and for that matter, KeKe’s supportive family—dad, siblings and her general outlook. She gives credit to a lot of entertainers, inserting quotes (Mother Teresa a personal favorite) she leans on. ‘Being a new mommy’ was vivid…and touching, similar to the ‘Power of Parenthood’. Without leaving spoilers, KeKe believes in trusting the process, separating work from play, staying curious, and operating like a business. ‘She is a business.’ However, the part I really leaned into was her observations about black & white critics critiquing black & white film. That one had to be read twice.
Overall, you must truly know and love you to see how she sees; a redeeming factor much respected. Individuals walking in their lane, happy and satisfied with life, always willing to learn, not only benefit their audiences, but society too. Very Good. Highly recommended. Read Hardback 2024 edition.
