Coming Home by Brittney Griner
Synopsis: WNBA All-Star Athlete’s reflection and testimony on her career and imprisonment in Russia.
Writing Style: Crisp. Clear. Chop-Chop-to-the-point.
Pacing: Fast.
Personal Highlights: Brittany really ‘palms’ her story. The short clipped sentences stick. She recounts her early childhood… school teasing she describes painfully clear, along with an otherwise affectionate upbringing. The bond with her dad, and how their relationship developed and grew was one of the most beautiful parts of her story! OH, I SO LOVED IT… because that near step-by-step replay of what happened leading up to her incarceration was hard to read. Before opening this book I didn’t realize how young she was/is, what contributed even more to this difficult read. Now, she might not see herself a kid, but I do, which I’m particularly sensitive when reading about kids living these hard experiences.
Overall, ’Coming Home’ definitely is an account young people would benefit from reading; or perhaps those in professional positions assisting young people with filtering through this complicated world. Highly recommended. Read 2024 hardback edition.
