A Man from Another Land by Isaiah Washington

Synopsis:
Testimony of an American/African Actor and Philanthropist Discovering his Roots.

Writing Style: Straightforward but Choppy. Passionate.

Pacing: Fast.

Personal Highlights: It took a minute to get into the prophetic, deeply reflective aim high writing. Washington’s growing up in Texas where the brown paper bag skin color concept diminished esteem, is foreign territory for some raised in places where ‘the blacker the berry and black power’ vibes ruled. But it’s not long before the story picks up, describing his experiences with “caste” systems practiced at HBCUs, which coalesced into pursuing his African origins. Gotta respect it, especially following his journey North where…and OH, I SO LOVED IT… his story takes off! Fascinating!!!

Other favorites; his start working with Spike Lee (in films), and his relationship with John Amos. “Can you be obsequious?”

Overall, and by far a favorite  (without leaving a bunch of spoilers), was the South Africa visit… and later connecting with the Mende and Temne people of Sierra Leone… where ‘man from another land’ was coronated Chief Gondobay Manga II. I couldn’t stop smiling either, and grinned harder as he passed along his great ancestors message. ‘WHOA’. Totally unexpected, as was the reply he got back. So much is contained in this memoir, little superseding Jenkins’ email and that full-circle ending!  What a beautiful testimony. The kind of personalized education difficult (if not impossible) to find in history books. A true diamond doesn’t cost a dime. Absolutely impressive & Highly recommended!!!
