Be Sweet by Roy Blount Jr.
Synopsis: Memoir of an American Writer.
Writing Style: First person, prolix of journalism, storytelling, and satire.
Pacing: Moderate, teetering on slow.
Personal Highlights: Blount’s memoir was challenging to read, and yet interesting. Centered around his relationship with his mother primarily, and sister, father, wives, women friends and many notables and less notables as well, required paying a lot of attention for the layered thoughts and long wending sentences often clipped and exchanged for an entirely different life event. Nonetheless, this style of storytelling made the humor coming out of almost nowhere that much funnier. Very interesting how the structuring worked. His humor reminds me of Woody Allen. Witty, dry, occasionally salty, though be advised not to be drinking or eating while reading. I as well enjoyed the abundance of unique noteworthy, if not fascinating, tidbits thrown in. I actually tried to look up where and when Al Gore once sat on President Nixon’s lap as a child. And that Jr.s’ list, WoW!. Aspiring writers looking for unique ways to share their stories might want to check this one out.
