Late Admissions by Glenn C. Loury
Writing Style: Passionate. Commercial.
Pacing: Fast.
Personal Highlights: Not that I had a clue who Professor Glenn Loury was prior to selecting his memoir to read, but this has to be one of the most surprising books I’ve read. I was not expecting this story, Loury being raised on Chicago’s Southside, by a value system seemingly so unlike inborn conservative values.
Surprising so be it, this book was hard to put down, and not entirely for its saucy tell-all slant, but for trying to understand his theoretical economic and conservative views… as clearly as I understood his so-to-speak 'off the clock' proclivities. I think that sales seminar…and the Woody event at the Panther rally was my first ‘ut oh’. Those events were glimmers into his core mindset. I had to laugh though, even before his father responded to that sales pitch. Oh man that was funny, which ironically encompasses the testimonies and confessions forthcoming.
Overall, this memoir was intense, ego and passionately driven. Chapter 10 I read twice. Had to look up hedonist. Dropped a tear with Coretta. And leaned into the copious arguments; his father’s quips a favorite. I did have to remind myself, this was a different time. All that and closing this book before the end was not easy. Highly recommended. Read Hardcopy 2024 copyright edition.
