This Child Will Be Great by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Synopsis:
Personal testimony of Africa’s First Female President.

Writing Style: Crisp. Deep. Straightforward.

Pacing: Fast.

Personal Highlights: Oh my goodness! I immediately and absolutely loved this book! The title is a conclusive winner!

Typical of many personal narratives written from the West/South Africa corridor of the globe, Sirleaf’s story reminded me of many others I’ve read. Layered with heavy facts and figures, but crystal clear. Storytelling at it’s finest.

She goes right into her heritage, which plays an important role in her journey. “Unlike many ‘privileged’ Liberians, she claims no American lineage.” Her father (Gola), who as a child worked as a ward (cheap labor), and mother (German), orphaned and later adopted by a prominent family, were at the roots of her beginning. This introduction makes it easy to understand Liberian ethos from both historical and cultural perspectives, though it was not the same easy breeze separating the many acronyms used to describe the political groups and causes; PAL… OAU… MOJA… and many, many others. I tried to take notes to keep track, but ultimately gave up and just followed the story.

Overall, Sirleaf’s life experiences, education, careers, travels…and passion earned her that hard fought and won presidential election. I.was.inspired! The way she illustrated the people and politics, the wars, and most critically… foreign policy and the international forces impacting the nation’s development, or lack thereof were detailed and well-written. What a hard book to put down. One of many quotes worth noting “...moving people beyond short-term thinking.” ‘This Child Will Be Great’ is an absolute must. So relevant to today's political climate. Highly recommended!!! Read soft copy 2009 copyright edition.
