Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) by Sly Stone
Synopsis: Testimony of an iconic American Rock Music Celebrity.
Writing Style: Edgy. Entertaining. Different.
Pacing: Moderately Fast.
Personal Highlights: For starters, the writing jumps right off the page. The short, choppy, kind of cocky… ‘you dig’ 70’s type writing amused me. The way it was, was the way it was. Music was Sly’s first, last and all-encompassing thing. He said he would do it for free. Loved that! Also according to him, ‘good music’ doesn’t have a color. Agreed. Interestingly enough, what slowed the pacing is a quest Sylvester espouses and I so respect. ‘Focus on the ART, NOT the ARTIST!’ (In other words, music is easier to hear than read.)
Overall, I really fell for…and couldn’t get enough of the precocious writing, and not always so nice. Read like a few word ninjas crafted it…on drums, keyboards and a sky high harmonica. That’s what slowed me down…trying to mute the rifts to read between lines. I think Stone’s doctor got it right. Sly and Sylvester are one person. My absolute favorite albeit, was reading about his friendship with the psychedelic funkadelic George Clinton. (Couldn’t pull us off dance floors… or out of nightclubs when these music maestros blasted through speakers…well not until the roof came down… hahaha). These guys were our rock. Thank You, Sly!
